Dear reader,
The Milliat Press began with a question: “Should we start a magazine dedicated to women in sports?”
I looked around, hoping to find one already out there that matched the ambition of the athletes themselves. The short answer: no. It doesn’t exist.
We are a print magazine by design. Magazine buying has decreased because print doesn’t offer the speed or interactivity of digital spaces. But that has never been its purpose. Reading something physical asks for your full attention — it invites you to pause, engage, and think. Our goal is to tell stories that hold that attention, articles and essays that are as entertaining as they are informative.
More questions followed:
What if stories of women in sports were studied with precision, dedication, and curiosity?
What if we created a publication that helped raise the visibility of women’s sports stories, inspired current and future generations of athletes, and ultimately kept more girls and women actively involved in sports?
Many studies over time have shown the effects youth sports have on improving children's physical and mental health, confidence levels and cognitive ability to set them up for success later in life. But somewhere in adolescence, girls start disappearing from the game, pushed out by gaps in access, visibility, and opportunity.
And yet the business of women’s sports is surging. Global revenue nearly doubled from 2023 to 2024, surpassing $1 billion for the first time. Still, in 2024, women’s sports claimed only about 15 percent of global sports media coverage.

So here’s my last question: why is the math not mathing?
To quote basketball superstar A’ja Wilson, “we have to continue to stand on business.” And we intend to. We are building the media infrastructure that makes women’s sports visible and sustainable.
In comes Milliat Press.
01. Where We’ve Started

@NYU, Research Methods Class / @Swish House Fam Jam Tournament
. Doing the research. Our approach is simple: When you understand the history of the sport and the athletes, you can interpret the present with more clarity, and see what might come next. Every article will be grounded in research and data.
. Beyond the research. NYU invited us to join a Research Methods class and talk through how we build stories, from question to source to draft. The students came prepared, asked sharp questions, and shared their own perspectives. Our takeaway: better stories will come from asking better questions.
. Building meaningful partnerships. In partnership with Swish House, we sponsored our first 3×3 Fam Jam Tournament. Swish House offers the world’s first basketball fitness class, and our partnership reflects a shared commitment to building community around women’s basketball.
. Putting the pieces together. We are launching The Milliat Press Ambassador Program, a cross-campus network uniting the next generation shaping women’s sports. Students gain experience, hone their craft, and join a community pushing women’s sports forward. Ambassadors contribute directly to Milliat’s editorial, research, and creative output, gaining publication opportunities and career visibility. Applications are open to actively enrolled students. Apply here.
02. Where We’re Going

. Printed Issue 01 is underway. We’re gathering all of the material needed to write, edit, and print the stories that will be a part of Issue 01. Below are some of the articles you can expect to find:
. Athlete profiles, opinion pieces, analytical essays, historical essays, research articles, cultural analysis, field reports, and in-depth interviews. .
